On June 22, 2016, the Compact of Mayors and the Covenant of Mayors announced the new Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy, a newly merged initiative to bring these two efforts together.

514 cities, representing 435,203,481 people worldwide and 6.01% of the total global population, have committed to the Compact of Mayors.
